Without an internet connection, you will need to download several packages on another computer and transfer them on a USB key or similar. Please go here and download the following: build-essential, libc6-dev, gcc, g++, make, dpkg-dev, linux-headers-generic and linux-headers matching your running kernel. Find out your running kernel with: uname -r For example, if you get 3.5.0-19-generic, then you will need to download and install linux-headers-3.5.0-19-generic. When you have all these packages downloaded, move them to the desktop of the Ubuntu machine and install them with: sudo dpkg -i Desktop/*.deb The wildcard * means install all the.deb files. Be sure to download 32- or 64-bit as appropriate.

Since installing the Atheros network ethernet adapter I still have a yellow warning at other devices - network controller. It does not list as any brand, just unknown. It shows the driver as missing and driver provider as unknown. There is only the tp-link wireless under network adapters. It of course goes away when I unplug the usb drive it is on. So no I am not good on wireless lan.
G90814: the tp-link is all install ed and works fine. It is not part of my system. Third party usb program. I'm not sure what you mean by only one network adapter. Ethernet and wireless show as separate adapters.
Problem solved. Between searches, here and Toshiba support I found a way to determine the brand of wireless. That is through start - system information. Navigate to problem devices and find the vendor and device information. On pci vendor page the answer is given.
In this case the wireless did turn out to be Realtek. I then found I could enable windows update to install the drivers if they could not be found. I uninstalled the Atheros since I was concerned I might have the wrong device drivers. Update installed Atheros in the ethernet controller and Realtek in wireless. That sure beats all the downloading and trying different drivers. I am sending this reply from the Realtek wireless with the TP-link disabled. I will uninstall it now.
Thanks for the help.
